The Aleutian Islands of Attu and Kiska are the only places since the War of 1812 where American soil has been attacked and occupied by a foreign power. 1100 miles from the Alaskan mainland and 1500 miles from Anchorage, Attu is isolated in location, but the symbolic implications of a homeland invasion intensified the push for military action. The Battle of Attu, fought between the Americans and Japanese in May of 1943, was the single land battle fought on the North American continent in World War II. 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of that event.
