Beach rocks from Attu, photo transfer on wood of Massacre Beach (taken by the artist), image transfers, scrap wood, hardware, nails, wood drawer
10" x 6.75" x 2.5"
Beach rocks from the island surround this altered photo of Massacre Bay. Four peoples and cultures mix and match here: a Native Unangax, Japanese Officer, Russian trader, and American pilot. Occupying the skies are an Evermann’s Rock Ptarmigan (a year-round resident and subspecies now only found on Attu); a Japanese Type Zero fighter plane; a Steller’s Sea Eagle (a bird of prey found on Attu, coastal northeastern Asia and far eastern Russia, named after naturalist Georg Steller who worked for the Russian discovery expedition of Alaska led by Vitus Bering); and an American Mitchell bomber. Both aircraft were used in the Aleutian Campaign of the Pacific Theater.
